Caliban

Caliban ( KAL-i-ban), son of the witch Sycorax, is an important character in William Shakespeare's play The Tempest.

His character is one of the few Shakespearean figures to take on a life of its own "outside" Shakespeare's own work: as Russell Hoban put it, "Caliban is one of the hungry ideas, he's always looking for someone to word him into being ... Caliban is a necessary idea".

Examples of use of Caliban
1. One of the best sustained characters in the piece was the Caliban of Mr Bass; it was the best monster that we have ever seen.
2. But it was acting that gripped her after she became obsessed by Shakespeare at the age of 13 and played Caliban in a school production of The Tempest.
3. Forbidden Planet, one of the most cerebral sci–fi movies, breathes fresh life into The Tempest with its robot–Caliban and fizzing id monsters, and adds Freudian psychology to make everything weirder.
4. Wolfgang Priklopil, her captor, had the DNA of beasts ranging from Caliban through the cruel and sexually deviant adults of the Grimm Brothers‘ Household Tales to John Fowles‘s fictional collector, who added a young woman to his butterfly archive.
5. Writing about his zeal to rebel against school authorities, he compared himself to Caliban, the rebel in Shakespeare‘s play "The Tempest." In personal diaries, Harris (who used the nickname "Reb") and Klebold ("Vodka") told of their unhappiness and fury at a student body that treated them as outcasts.
